KELNIK HISTORY |

Kelnik GSD Est. 1980
Est. 1980
So, let’s start at the beginning. I have always been a great dog lover. As a child my brothers, sisters and I were not allowed a dog (I think my Mother probably thought she had enough of us to feed). I would constantly go out looking for strays, bring them home, feed and water them (without my Mothers knowledge, of course), name them, groom them, tuck them up all nice and warm in the outhouse, to find that by the next morning they had run away again (probably gone Home). I was bitten more times than I can remember by dogs that didn’t understand that they needed my attention.
The first GSD I acquired in 1973, a young male who had been too boisterous for his previous owners. His temperament left a lot to be desired and as I did not acquire him until he was some 10 months old, I was never very sure if his previous environment had been to blame, or whether it was his breeding.

Hogan
|
Hogan developed in to a promising young puppy and won quite a few open canine and breed shows. The problem was that he just kept growing – but what a male! I always remember Jack Oliver having a soft spot for Hogan and we agreed that if we could downsize him by 2" he would have been hard to beat. He eventually signed up and gained one of the top positions in the RAF, guarding the NATO Headquarters in Brussels

|
The first brood bitch I purchased, was from a Mr Thomas, in Hull in 1981, ‘Delmonic Helen’ (Masuta Pfeffer x Vornlante Jacquita). Helen went on to win well in the show ring. By the time she was 9 months old we were fortunate enough to acquire her litter sister ‘Delmonic Hella’, her breeder who had chosen her as pick of the litter, did not have time to show her. Hella was a much stronger and rangier type of dog than her sister. Although shown a few times successfully, she never really took to the idea, so we left her to enjoy her home life – she certainly was a character! Sadly, her sister Helen, did not go on to produce any puppies, but through Hella as the main brood bitch the Kelnik Kennels were truly established. |

The most successful year the Kelnik Kennels had was 1986. Several of the dogs owned by both others and myself did well. The crowning glory was with Champion Kelnik Anika who went on to gain 11 C.C’s and 4 res. C.C’s.. The G.S.D. League Championship Show and Crufts being among the most memorable, not only because they are prestigious shows but also because of the great support we had from our friends and other exhibitors. Also the fact that the competition was extremely high both numerically and in quality.
Anika went on to take the award for the Top Winning GSD in the UK for that year. We lost Anika eventually at the age of 12 years. I would have loved to have brought her back as a veteran; she retained her youthfulness up until the last year of her life. The problem was that she had had an accident damaging some of the muscle near her front shoulder and this slightly showed in her once effortless, far reaching gait. Her son Kelnik Fergus also went on and became a champion.

My first judging appointment was in 1985 and I have judged at several Breed shows and some canine shows since. I fulfilled the Kennel Clubs requirement to judge at championship show level by 1990 and was entered accordingly on the Kennel Clubs records. Just around this time though, heavy work commitments prevented me from attending any shows. A four/five year break from breeding/showing followed. Since my return to the 'sport' in 1998 I have successfully completed the Breed Councils Championship Show Judges exam and subsequently completed my first Championship Show 'at the GSD Club of Kent in May of this year. I feel that having taken a break I have now come back with a broader, fresher view. My kennels are carefully becoming re-established and I have been enjoying the company/training/showing of that special dog Irish Champion Quarryvale Nero since October 1999

UPDATE
Here we are now
already in 2005. Over the last six years I have continued to build
on on the quality of my Kennels.
My fabulous Blerio Rumours of Kelnik (whom sadly I lost in 2004)
provided me with my outstanding Kelnik ‘L’ litter to the Sieger
Ursus von Batu’s famous son Ghandi von Arlett, Ghandi subsequently
went on to gain the VA7 and the VA4 titles in Germany. Out of this
litter 6 were X-rayed and scored with the BVA/KC system with the
highest score being a total of 9. To date, I do not know of any
other Kennel who have had so many dogs scored from one litter, let
alone have such good results. If you take a look at the "L" Litter
page you will see the quality children and now grandchildren from
these two
I travelled to Germany to purchase my next acquisition. This being
the very good quality female from the renowned von Oasis Kennels
‘Emmy von Oasis’
‘Emmy’ is the half sister through her mother to the VA bitch
Shalome von Oasis and is by the excellent producer Wallace aus
Agrigento, she will be mated later this year
Bill Owen of the Blerio Kennels and myself have this year
purchased our next German Import ‘Ricko von Lennepertal’ who is by
the well known male VA Ando v Altenberger out of a very good
producing Haus Babilon female. This dog has been brought to
enhance our breeding programme and puppies by this male will be
around soon. Go to the males page page for pedigree details.
In the near future we will be looking at extending our breeding
pool with some more quality new blood. As I am more interested in
the breeding side these days, there will be pick of litters
available to discerning people, from the litters I breed.
My active role in the GSD World has somewhat increased over the
last few years. I was recently elected by the GSD Breed Council to
be the first female Breed Surveyor in the UK. Along with these
duties, Championship show judging appointments and other
commitments such as my duties as Breed Secretary of the Midland
Counties GSD Association (organising Championship and Open shows),
election on to the GSD League of Great Britain Council (where I
now have the role of Editor of their bi-annual magazine), I have
been elected to the position of Event Manager for the historic
first British Sieger Show. I also write on a part time basis for
the GSD column of the National Dog Paper ‘Our Dogs’.
